From Modelling to Independence

Independence does not mean leaving pupils to discover everything for themselves. Teachers explicitly model new knowledge, strategies and processes before gradually transferring greater responsibility to pupils.

I Do

The teacher models expert thinking clearly and makes the steps of a process visible.

We Do

Teacher and pupils practise together, with carefully chosen questions, prompts and feedback.

You Do

Pupils apply their learning increasingly independently.

Scaffolds are used purposefully and reduced as knowledge and confidence grow. Our principle is simple: support when it is needed; independence when pupils are ready.
