Personal Development

At Harper Bell Seventh-day Adventist School, personal development is at the heart of our commitment to providing "A more excellent way." Rooted in our Christian ethos, we aim to develop confident, compassionate and responsible young people who are well prepared for life in modern Britain. Through our worship programme, Mountain of Excellence, the PSHE curriculum/myHappymind, and wider the curriculum, pupils develop strong character, positive relationships, resilience, emotional literacy and an understanding of how to keep themselves and others safe. Opportunities to learn about healthy lifestyles, online safety, relationships, different cultures and communities, sustainability and the wider world help pupils develop respect for others and an understanding of their responsibilities as citizens.

Our personal development offer extends far beyond the classroom. Pupils are encouraged to lead, contribute and make a difference through our House system, pupil leadership roles and opportunities linked to faith, wellbeing, representation, reading, sport and health, digital communication, events and sustainability. A growing programme of lunchtime and after-school enrichment, sporting opportunities, visitors, trips, performances, community events and special experiences enables pupils to discover new interests and talents. We deliberately create opportunities for pupils to have a voice, serve others and take increasing responsibility within their school community. Working closely with parents, carers and the wider community, our ambition is that every child leaves Harper Bell with the character, confidence, values and experiences they need to thrive academically, socially and spiritually.

British Council Learning Sectors Partnership

We are delighted to share that Harper Bell Seventh-day Adventist School is taking part in the British Council's Learning Sectors programme, supported by Formula 1®, from October 2026 to March 2027. The programme connects UK schools with partner schools in India or Spain, giving pupils the opportunity to collaborate on exciting curriculum-linked projects and learn from one another. Through the partnership, pupils will explore STEM, broadcasting, media and future careers, while developing important skills including critical thinking, teamwork, problem solving, digital literacy, communication and intercultural awareness.

For our pupils, this means opportunities to share learning with an international partner school, work collaboratively on STEM and oracy activities, hear about real-life careers connected with Formula 1®, and contribute to a final STEM Futures Challenge. The programme is designed for primary pupils aged 7-11, making it particularly relevant to our Key Stage 2 children.

Safeguarding remains central to the programme. Any pupil-to-pupil online interaction must take place using school-approved platforms and in line with the school's safeguarding procedures, with a member of staff physically present while pupils communicate with their partner school. Images or footage of children will not be shared without appropriate parental consent.

This exciting partnership complements Harper Bell's wider personal development offer by broadening pupils' horizons, strengthening their confidence and communication, increasing their awareness of the wider world and helping them recognise the range of possibilities available to them in the future. It is another way in which we are seeking to provide our pupils with "A more excellent way."
